“The POWER of Your Mind”
By Sherman Ragland | September 7, 2007
The POWER of the Mind.
Regardless of ones personal religious beliefs, science tells us that mankind is different from the rest of creation in one demonstrable way: Man’s ability to think, to reason and to change the course of his life based on nothing more than changing the way he thinks.
It is this power of the mind that is discussed throughout the ancient scriptures. Specifically where it talks about the ability of man to think (and reason) within his heart.
Proverbs 4:23 admonishes us to “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life”. Meaning: be careful of what you think about, and allow yourself to think about, because those thoughts will direct your life. Another often quoted, or I should say misquoted scripture is Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he”, which some have translated into: “As a man thinketh, so is he”. A more appropriate translation would be: “Forget about what another person tells you, for it is the thoughts they keep within themselves that are the true essence of who they are.
Often times when we say the word: “Think”, it is a very superficial, passive idea, such as:
“Oh yes, I saw that house for sale and thought about making an offer…” or words to this affect. In other words, using the word “think”, and its passed tense, “thought” as some lame excuse for not taking action, as though merely “thinking” about something is justification for being lazy and ineffective. When someone talks about thinking in these terms, they really have not thought at all! It is just a pathetic attempt to get someone off their case, as it were, so they can continue making excuses.
When I say “THINK”, I mean to actually sit down and do what the ancient text says to do: To “reason it out”, to contemplate and discuss with the highest power (what some people call “prayer”), to actually have to agonize over, because you are faced with having to make a decision. A decision to do what you have always done (and get what you have always gotten) or to step out on faith in a new direction and maybe have a different outcome this time – the one you have been seeking (Oh, here comes that word: prayer, again). To me there is NOTHING passive about the word “THINK” it requires effort and demands focused attention.
But before you dismiss me completely, understand this: you will win your battles in your mind, long before you have your victory on the battlefield. You will accumulate great riches from the plans you lay out in your head, long before it is reflected in your bank account. And when you breath that last breath on earth, you will ULTIMATELY have lived a life that is a DIRECT reflection of your accumulated thoughts.
Wisdom admonishes us to “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life”, because ultimately, WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT.
