“Would You Please Remove Your Cold, Clammy Hand From My Pocket…”
By Sherman Ragland | October 26, 2007
From an early age I knew I was a “little different” then the rest of my family.
My first awakening to politics was as a first grader, watching Richard Nixon on the black and white TV. I did not have a clue what the man was talking about, but he seemed to be an important dude, so I watched while my parents questioned why a six-year old would be interested in watching “tricky Dick” on the tube.
As time has gone on, I have discovered that my politics and my attitudes towards politicians leans a little further to the right, then my parents and sisters, but I would never describe myself as being a part of the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” group that Hillary Clinton described in her now famous interview with Matt Lauer on January 27, 1998, when she appeared on The Today Show to denounce the allegations that Bill Clinton had an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Note: The alligations ultimately proved true, of course, but we never did exactly find these “right wingers”.
So I found it very strange to find myself flipping through a copy of Ann Coulter’s new book If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans, while waiting in the checkout line at the Giant Supermarket – YEAH, right between the Tabloids and the Gum.
What was even stranger, ‘out of body experience’ type strange, is that I actually thought some of the stuff she said was thought provoking enough for me to put it on the conveyor, buy the thing, and take it home to finish reading.
So, I’m thumbing through this book finding about 1/2 of what she says to be intriguing and the other 1/2 borderline offensive to “whacko”, but I read on anyway and finish about 3 more chapters and call it a night…
And now I find myself looking at my email and newsposts and going, “oh my god, she just may be right…” No, not about everything, but about how stupid some politicians are when it comes to anything that happens to be about M-O-N-E-Y. And 99.9% of the time, these people who are complete BAFOONS about money happen to be DEM’s, not “us”.
Case in point::
From a leading Trade Paper for the Mortgage Industry: WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Representatives. Brad Miller (D-NC), Mel Watt (D-NC), and Barney Frank (D-MA) (ALL “DEMS”, not “US”) introduced The Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act of 2007, which according to their joint statement is intended to provide “comprehensive legislation to combat abuses in the mortgage lending market.” However, in addition to establishing a “nationwide registration regime”, the proposed legislation will also prohibit Yield Spread Premiums (YSP) to be paid to brokers, wipe away qualifying benefits for adjustable rate and interest only borrowers, and will essentially make “No Doc” and “Low Doc” loans illegal.
Wonderful! At the very time when the Mortgage Banking Industry is still trying to recover from the Sub-prime Meltdown, and the housing industry is BADLY in need of a recovery in the mortgage markets to get back on its feet, Representatives Miller, Watt and Frank basically want to shut down the mortgage markets in a way that recovery of the housing industry probably wont happen in ‘08, ‘09 or for the next several years…. But who really cares anyway. The housing industry only represents 12-14% of the US Economy. “DUH”
Or, this one JUST IN from the Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors(r) President Brenda Small.
Pertaining to the recent decision by the Governor of Maryland (one of “DEM”s) to call in all of the state legislators (Approximately 3/4th’s of the Representatives in Maryland are also “DEM”s) for a SPECIAL SESSION to discuss Maryland’s $1.4 billion supposid “short-fall”, Brenda says:
“Dear GCAAR Members: …The state of Maryland is AGAIN looking to line its pockets with taxes levied from the real estate industry through a real-property management service tax. Renters, homeowners, and condo-owners residing in property-managed communities, as well as small business owners who lease, will ultimately bear the cost of this tax in the form of higher rents and dues. It will negatively impact housing affordability and discourage small business growth.” She’s ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! The Politicians in Maryland are Now 100% COMPLETELY OUT OF CONTROL…
In fact, as a member of the Executive Committee of one of Maryland’s largest Chambers of Commerce, I know that what the Governor and State Legislators in Maryland are planning for their SPECIAL SESSION is none other than the SINGLE LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY for Maryland Citizens and Maryland Based Businesses. Which is really STUPID, because you can easily live in Maryland and base your business in VIRGINIA, which CURRENTLY has taxes and fess that are less than half of what it costs to set up shop in Maryland. So, look out VIRGINIA, we are all heading your way in about 60 days…
And during this SPECIAL SESSION in Annapolis, do you think anyone will actually stand up and say: “HEY WHY DON’T WE JUST ALL AGREE TO SPEND LESS OF THE TAXPAYERS MONEY AND JUST GO HOME?” -or “HEY GANG, IF WE REALLY DO THIS, DON’T YOU THINK WE WILL SEE A MASS EXODUS OF SMALL BUSINESSES TO VIRGINIA??” Not on your life!
I did not come into this world as one of them “Right Wingers”, but man, the audacity of politicians, particularly “DEM” and NOT “US” to want to spend OTHER PEOPLE’S (as in our) Money, and pass laws that leads to a complete shut down of major segments of the economy makes you wonder – Is Ann Coulter totally nuts?
Not sure which is a scarier thought, that she is totally off her rocker, or just maybe she makes some very good points – indeed.
Maybe this is why the only people in Washington, DC right now with an Approval Rating that is HALF of what George Bush is getting are the LEADERS in Congress, controlled by “DEM”.
If you actually know a politician, yes, especially a locally elected one, please do us all a favor and take them out to lunch and talk to them. Help them understand that being elected is not an excuse for “being stupid”. If you pass dumb laws that shut down major segments of the economy, or when you spend others money like their is no tomorrow – ultimately there will be “no tomorrow”. Please help “DEM” to think more like “US” when it comes voting on issues dealing with money and the economy.
P.s. – And while you are at lunch, please tell them that Sherman says: “Would You Please Remove Your Cold, Clammy Hand From My Pocket and Take Your Figers Off My Wallet – Thank You!”
